Publication: Realdania Byg og Bygs historical properties 2003-2023

Since 2003, Realdania Byg & Byg has built up a portfolio of historic properties to preserve them for posterity and give them a contemporary life. A new book from the company focuses on the building culture and some of the layers of Denmark's history that the houses bear witness to.

Twenty years ago, the association Realdania founded the company Realdania By & Byg, which contributes to fulfilling the association's objectives by, among other things, acquiring real estate in order to preserve the building heritage.

Today, it has become more than 60 properties, which represent different periods, functions and architectural trends. Realdania Byg & Byg restores the historic buildings, rents them out, opens them for tours a few times a year and publishes them in books about the individual houses.

500 years of building culture

Now, in a new book, the company has chosen to look at the entire portfolio and the 500 years of building culture that it represents, from a helicopter perspective.

- With the book, we raise our gaze over our more than 60 properties and the entire building culture that they represent. We hope that the new book will interest many and perhaps also inspire you to experience for yourself some of the fantastic buildings and the stories that the houses contain, about society, about architectural trends and not least about people's lives through the ages, says admin. director of Realdania Byg & Byg, Peter Cederfeld.

The book "Realdania By & Byg's historical properties 2003-2023" contains, among other things, essays which focus on building culture's stories about social development, women's space in houses historically, energy and sustainability - and that the houses of functionalism were full of colour.

Focus on building types

In addition, the focus is on some of the types of buildings that are represented among Realdania By & Byg's properties, on their architecture and the role that the historic houses have played in society. Here you can read about agricultural buildings, town halls, the buildings of industrialization and ground-breaking houses that leading Danish architects have built over time as housing for themselves and their families.

Finally, the book contains interviews with a tenant in one of the many historic houses and a central representative of the state conservation authority.

The new book is thus based on Realdania By & Byg's work with historic properties, but in addition the company also deals with experimental new construction and land development projects.
