The key goals in developing the Kvaesthus project were to promote rich and diverse urban life and provide better access to the waterfront. The project comprises Ofelia Plads, a large, new square surrounded by water on three sides, together with an underground car park.
The expansion of Copenhagen has created a need for more space for urban life. And along the city’s former industrial harbour there is a host of recreational potential crying out for new space in which to improve the quality of life and well-being.
With this in mind, the Kvaesthus project takes the form of an expansive new city square with space for urban life and activities for Copenhageners and the city's many visitors. The project is situated right on the Port of Copenhagen waterfront next to the Royal Danish Playhouse, nestling between the canals of Nyhavn and Amalienborg Palace. Complementing the Kvaesthus project, Sankt Annæ Plads has been renovated in close coordination with the project.
The Kvaesthus project comprises three main elements:
Ofelia Plads was inaugurated in 2017 as Copenhagen's expansive new city square with space for the performing arts in close proximity to the water.
Together with the Kissing Steps, the square, situated on the Kvaesthus Pier, is owned by the Danish Ministry of Culture and the Royal Danish Theatre.
Together with Realdania, the Royal Danish Theatre and Jeudan, which operates the car park beneath Ofelia Plads, have set up the Ofelia Plads Association, which runs events and activities on the square. If you are interested in booking Ofelia Plads for your event, festival etc. simply contact the Ofelia Plads Association (Foreningen Ofelia Plads).
The new car park has made it possible to redevelop Sankt Annæ Plads, which has long been filled with parked cars, into a new recreational space which strengthens the links between the historic city centre and the waterfront.
The car park itself is a three-storey underground facility with space for 500 cars. The entrance and exit ramps are located on Sankt Annæ Plads.
The car park is bright and inviting, and parking your car here feels like an integrated and positive part of the experience of seeing a play at the Royal Theatre, visiting Ofelia Plads or participating in other activities in the area. The three storeys of the car park are connected by an open space running the entire length of the facility. Daylight shines in through the glass bricks which roof the facility. The bottom level, three storeys underground, is designed for other activities besides parking.
